The Best Places to Check Out in Culebra PR
Are you planning a trip to the fantastic island of Culebra in Puerto Rico? From clean and beautiful beaches to informative historical locations, there's a lot to do! Though we can't blame you for wanting to spend all day just enjoying the plentiful Puerto Rican sun and tropical weather with a nice drink.
However you want to spend your trip, here's a list of 4 major attractions and locations you should visit to make the most of your journey!
1. Beautiful Isla Culebrita
This first location includes two must-experience places near Culebra. First of all, Isla Culebrita is a completely uninhabited island, which has been practically untouched by human hands. The only man-made building on the entire island is a rustic lighthouse that makes for a picturesque place for taking memorable photos, especially at sunset.
If you love birdwatching or would love to see some exotic and often colorful birds of the area, then this destination is for you. Isla Culebrita is also a part of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge. This park designation is rarely given and only applied to the most untouched persevered wildlands. Over 80 species of rare birds inhabit the remote island!
While you're visiting, don't forget to check out Playa Tortuga, the most popular and famous beach on the island!
2. Flamenco Beach
Flamenco Beach is consistently rated amongst the best beaches in the world because of its iconic soft white sand. If you're interested in staying for more than a day trip, camping is allowed at the north shore. But make sure you call ahead and make a reservation before dedicating your trip to living on the beach for a weekend!
3. Culebra Historical Museum
This historical building, also known as El Polvorín, was constructed in 1905. While its original purpose was to store ammunition for the US Navy, it now functions solely as a museum. It preserves the history of the island and promotes conservation to save local endangered sea turtle species. It also holds historical maps, and many exhibits describe what life was like in Culebra in the 1800s.
4. Luis Peña
Luis Peña is the second-largest cay near Culebra and is full of many beaches that offer smooth sand and clear waters. So, you'll have a good time whether you like to lounge on a towel in the sun or if you like exploring the shores for shells and exotic fish.
This location is great if you're an avid snorkeler, as a gorgeous coral reef lies to the southeast of the cay and is perfect for hunting for colorful fish and seeing underwater landscapes.
