What to Do in Vail and Beaver Creek, Colorado

If someone says “Vail,” you probably think of luxurious ski trips to the Colorado mountains. However, the Vail Valley and the alpine village of Beaver Creek offer so much more than just skiing — though your guess about the luxury would probably be spot-on. Beaver Creek is one of the more posh locales in the region. But, if you’re looking for something to do in the area, you don’t necessarily need to be looking for a luxurious experience in order to have fun. There are tons of ways to play here, no matter the season and no matter your budget.

1. Hit the Trails

If you’re not visiting in the late fall, winter or early spring, you’ll find the various types of trails around Vail Valley are mostly open, snow-free and ready for business. You can find a range of hiking opportunities, whether you want a short, one-mile trek or a longer, more challenging journey. Beyond hiking, you can also enjoy mountain biking and e-biking. Biking not your thing? You can hop aboard a different style of steed, with horseback riding opportunities around the area.

2. Get Out on (or in!) the Water

Colorado’s pristine streams make the perfect setting for trying your hand at a new outdoor activity. Fly fishing opportunities abound, including fly-fishing lessons, if you need a friendly guide. If you fancy something a little more high-energy, you can try river rafting.

3. Check Out the Family-Friendly Attractions

If you’re traveling with the kids in tow and want to schedule time in your itinerary for activities the entire family can enjoy together, consider heading to Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in nearby Glenwood’s Springs, which offers amusement-style rides, cave tours and lots of children’s activities. The park also boasts the country’s first alpine coaster and a 4-D theater. For family-friendly thrills, try Zip Adventures in Wolcott, for six zip lining experiences.

4. Enjoy the Snow Off the Slopes

If you're traveling to the Vail Valley in the winter, and you want to ski, chances are you know exactly where to go. Vail offers tons of terrain for avid skiers.

But if you aren’t keen on skiing and want a different way to enjoy the snow, you’ll have options, too. You can book a guided snowshoe tour at the Walking Mountains Science Center, go fat biking at the Vail Nordic Center or try your hand at cross-country skiing at Vail Golf Course or the Vail Nordic Center (and, trust us, it’s way different than downhill skiing — you may just love it!).
